FLUOROCARBON, THE BEST CHOICE

When Euronymphing, the tippet must have very special properties in order to achieve maximum fishing effectiveness. As it is directly connected to the nymphs, it must be as inconspicuous as possible in order not to spook the fish. On the other hand, the nymphs drift along the bottom of the water, where they can repeatedly come into contact with stones and other obstacles. A good tippet must therefore also be resistant to abrasion so that it does not break suddenly.

The best material for this task is undoubtedly fluorocarbon, which has some particularly favourable properties compared to nylon, such as:

• Excellent resistance to abrasion
• Excellent knot strength
• Inconspicuous under water
• Elevated sinking speed

Its high abrasion resistance and excellent knot strength make fluorocarbon the Euronymph angler's best ally. It is very resistant when pulled over stones and other obstacles in the water, but also to the teeth of fish, which often cut through the fine tippet. Of course, fluorocarbon is not an indestructible miracle line either, but it is certainly the best option for making your Euronymph tippets.

In addition, fluorocarbon has a very similar light refraction to water. This does not make this material invisible, as many may claim, but in water fluorocarbon is much less visible and therefore less noticeable than nylon. As you tie your nymphs directly to the tippet, a line that is as inconspicuous as possible can really make all the difference. It would be a shame to fish with catchy fly patterns and still not catch anything because a conspicuous line spooks the fish.

Fluorocarbon also has a higher specific weight than conventional monofilament and, unlike nylon, sinks. As only the tippet is immersed in the water alongside the nymphs when Euronymphing and the flies need to reach the bottom as quickly as possible to be effective, sinking tippet material can only help. Especially on difficult days, often only very small, not too heavily weighted patterns will catch. In such cases, anything that slows down the efficient sinking of your nymphs is counterproductive. As a nylon line tends to float, you will hardly catch anything in such situations.
